CMH Regional Health System
CMH Regional Health System is anchored by Wilmington-based Clinton Memorial Hospital, a 150-bed medical/surgical acute care hospital founded in 1951. The hospital, which operates 95 beds, has medical, surgical, telemetry, observation, intensive care, inpatient rehabilitation, and pediatric beds and also offers wound care and a sleep laboratory. Emergency services is staffed only by board-certified emergency medicine-trained physicians.
CMH has a wide-range of radiology services, including interventional radiology, and also offers a variety of services away from the main campus—home care, occupational health, a family practice residency program, outpatient rehabilitation and system-owned physician practices in family medicine and neurology.
The Foster J. Boyd, MD, Regional Cancer Center opened in February 2007.
CMH has a medical staff of more than 200 physicians representing 35 different sub-specialties, employs more than 800 people, and has more than 100 volunteers.
County overview
Clinton County is located in southwestern Ohio and has an estimated population of 43,399. Located between Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton, Clinton County is within easy driving distance of all three cities as well as Indiana and Kentucky. Wilmington, the county seat, was named one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America in 1993, the No. 1 Most Livable Neighborhood in 1995 and a Dreamtown by Demographics Daily in 2000. Wilmington’s downtown is on the National Register of Historic Districts and has also received designation as an Ohio Main Street Community, a program designed to preserve historic downtowns.
History
Clinton County was founded in 1810 and named after George Clinton, then vice president of the U.S. Settlers named the county seat Wilmington, derived from the seaport in North Carolina. The county is essentially a rural one but its industrial base has grown immensely since the 1970s. Landmarks such as the Murphy Theatre, the General Denver Hotel, the Clinton County Courthouse, Snow Hill Country Club and General James W. Denver’s former residence, home of the Clinton County History Center, preserve the county’s history.
Education
Clinton County has four school districts: Blanchester Local, Clinton-Massie Local, East Clinton Local and Wilmington City. Blanchester has 1,771 students. Clinton-Massie has more than 1,773 students. East Clinton has 1,571 students and Wilmington has more than 3,300 students.
The Laurel Oaks Career Development Campus provides high school juniors and seniors with career and technical education. Children with disabilities attend school in their respective school districts. Education for these students is coordinated through Town and Country School and the Clinton County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.
Wilmington College, founded in 1870, is a private liberal arts college with about 1,200 students. The college was founded by Quakers and promotes the Quaker ideals of humanitarian service, nonviolence, peacemaking and social justice.
Southern State Community College has four locations that serve Clinton, Adams, Brown, Highland and Fayette Counties. The North Campus is located in Wilmington and houses the Corporate and Community Services division.
The Blanchester, Sabina and Wilmington public libraries cooperate to offer a range of materials and services. Clinton Memorial Hospital also has a medical library which is open to the public.
Industry
Clinton County continues to evolve as manufacturing and service industries are welcomed to the area. The county boasts a number of quality businesses and industries. The Wilmington Air Park, owned by the Clinton County Port Authority, is home to a variety of businesses, which focus on aviation, healthcare, education and pharmaceuticals.
Accessibility is important to many of the area industries and Clinton County has one interstate (I-71), three U.S. routes and 13 state highways to serve local businesses. In addition, the county is within 600 miles of 60 percent of the nation’s population.
Parks and Recreation
Clinton County has numerous state, city and village parks that offer many opportunities for outdoor recreation. There is also a YMCA for indoor recreational activities. The county has three golf courses, recreational trails, nature preserves, several outdoor pools, and strong 4-H and FFA youth programs. Wilmington College participates in 21 sports within NCAA Division III.
There are also large community events held throughout the year. Fair and festival-goers will appreciate the Clinton County Fair, the Clinton County Corn Festival, the Banana Split Festival, the Wilmington Art and Pottery Festival, the Wilmington Oktoberfest and the Hometown Holidazzle Illuminated Parade and Festival.
The Murphy Theatre and Wilmington College also host a variety of theatrical performances, shows and programs. Many other community events take place year-round, and numerous service and social clubs exist for a variety of personal interests.
As a tribute to the county’s bicentennial in 2010, 54 Clinton County barns are adorned with barn quilt patterns, adding to the “clothesline” of barn quilts that traverse the nation.
Dining
Clinton County offers a wide variety of dining experiences, from well-known national chains to familiar, family-owned restaurants. Fine dining can be found at several locations. There are also restaurants offering international cuisine and delis that cater to health-conscious individuals. Many fast-food restaurants are located in Clinton County as well.
Shopping
Clinton County has many family-owned specialty shops. There are several modern shopping areas located in Clinton County. Large companies such as Kroger and Wal-Mart have locations in the county and its location makes it easy to get to numerous malls and shopping areas within 30 to 60 minutes.
